The Weight Was Never Yours to Carry
“Sometimes the greatest act of faith isn’t praying one more prayer, it’s leaving the burden at the feet of the One who has always been the Savior.” –Amber Camp
There are prayers we pray that carry names.
Our children.
Our spouses.
Our friends.
We whisper them in the car. We carry them into church. We kneel with them at night.
And somewhere along the way, if we aren’t careful, those prayers begin to feel like assignments.
Like if we just pray hard enough.
Believe strong enough.
Show up faithfully enough, and maybe we can rescue the story.
We would never say those words out loud, but sometimes we begin carrying a responsibility that was never ours.
We love deeply.
So we carry deeply.
But Scripture paints a different picture.
In Luke 10:38-42, Martha is busy. Distracted. Overwhelmed. Mary is sitting at Jesus’ feet. Jesus doesn’t correct Martha’s heart. He gently corrects her posture.
“Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things…”
That line always stops me.
Not sinful.
Not rebellious.
Just worried.
Just carrying too much.
Mary chose the better place, not because serving was wrong, but because sitting with Jesus was necessary.
Sometimes laying everything at Jesus’ feet isn’t a dramatic moment of surrender.
Sometimes it’s simply choosing not to carry what only He can fix.
It’s sitting instead of striving.
It’s remembering that He is still the Savior.
First Peter 5:7 tells us to cast all our anxiety on Him because He cares for us.
Cast.
What a powerful word.
Not manage.
Not hold onto it just in case.
Not pick it back up tomorrow morning.
Cast it.
And leave it there.
Interceding for the people we love is one of the greatest privileges we’ve been given.
But somewhere we have to remember that our prayers were never meant to replace Jesus. They were always meant to lead people to Him.
We are not the healer.
We are not the rescuer.
We are not the One who changes hearts.
Jesus is.
Our role is faithfulness. His role is transformation.
If your shoulders feel heavy today, maybe it’s because you’ve been carrying someone that Jesus has been asking you to trust Him with.
You don’t have to stop praying.
Just stop carrying.
There is a difference.
One is an act of faith.
The other is a weight you were never created to bear.
So today, picture yourself sitting where Mary sat.
At His feet.
Leave your child’s name there.
Leave your spouse’s name there.
Leave your friend’s name there.
Leave your own name there too.
Because the safest place for the people you love has never been in your hands. It’s always been at the feet of Jesus.
Jesus,
Thank You for reminding me that You never asked me to be the rescuer. You simply invited me to bring the people I love to You. Today I release every burden I’ve been carrying that was never mine to hold. I place my children, my spouse, my family, my friends, and every situation I cannot fix at Your feet. Teach me the difference between faithful prayer and unnecessary striving.
Help me to trust Your timing, Your wisdom, and Your love even when I cannot see what You’re doing. When I am tempted to pick those burdens back up, gently remind me that You are already holding them.
Teach me to rest where Mary rested, knowing that the safest place I can leave the people I love is with the Savior who loves them even more than I do.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
