A Simple Act of Kindness

I was standing in the customer service line today, waiting to return something, when out of nowhere I heard…

“Did you curl your hair today?”

I looked around to see who was talking to me. I laughed and said, “No, this is all natural… and honestly, it’s not even a good curly hair day!”

We both giggled.

Then she smiled and said something I wasn’t expecting.

“Well… it’s beautiful. And your heart is too.”

I’ve never met this woman before.

Ironically, I don’t usually shop at that particular location. We were simply two strangers whose paths crossed for a brief moment in a customer service line.

The funny thing is, I wasn’t having a terrible day.

I wasn’t crying.

Nothing catastrophic had happened.

But my mind had been racing all morning with the burdens so many of the people I love are carrying right now. Like so many of us, I was quietly holding the weight of things no one around me could see.

Her words didn’t magically erase those burdens. They didn’t change my circumstances, but they did change my posture.

For just a moment, they interrupted the heaviness. They made me smile.

It reminded me how incredibly powerful kindness can be.

We often underestimate the impact of a few sincere words because we assume they have to solve someone’s problems to matter.

They don’t.

Sometimes they simply remind a weary heart that there is still goodness in the world.

Scripture tells us:

“Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.” -Proverbs 16:24

Honey doesn’t remove the wound. It soothes it.

Today, a stranger unknowingly offered a little honey to my soul.

And it made me wonder…

How many people did I pass today who were carrying invisible burdens?

How many smiles are hiding heartbreak?

How many strong people are simply trying to make it through another day?

We may never know.

Which is exactly why kindness matters.

A compliment.

An encouraging text.

A smile.

A genuine “I’m praying for you.”

None of these cost very much.

Yet they often become the very thing someone remembers long after they’ve forgotten everything else about their day.

You never know what someone is carrying, but you always have the opportunity to help them carry it a little lighter.

So today, be generous with your words. Someone’s weary heart may be standing right in front of you.
