When Silence Feels Like Abandonment
“Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.” –Matthew 26:56
There is a moment in the story that feels… uncomfortable to sit in.
Not because of what Jesus did.
But because of what everyone else did.
They left.
The same people who walked with Him.
Ate with Him.
Promised loyalty.
Gone.
Not slowly.
Not thoughtfully.
They fled.
And if we’re honest, there is something in that moment that hits deeper than we like to admit.
Because most of us know what it feels like to be left.
To look around in a moment when you thought someone would stay… and realize you’re standing there alone.
Jesus knew that feeling.
Not just physically alone, but emotionally abandoned in one of the most intense moments of His life.
And yet… God was not absent.
That’s the part we wrestle with.
Because sometimes silence feels like abandonment.
When prayers feel unanswered.
When support disappears.
When the people you thought would stand beside you don’t.
It’s easy to believe that silence means God has stepped back.
But the cross proves something different.
God is not absent in silence.
He is often doing His deepest work there.
The disciples ran.
But the plan didn’t.
Nothing about that moment caught heaven off guard.
Nothing about your moment does either.
And maybe what feels like abandonment…is actually a space where God is doing something you can’t yet see.
Jesus stood alone for a moment.
So you never truly have to.
Father,
In the moments when silence feels heavy and I start to question where You are, remind me of what is true.
Remind me that You are not absent, even when things feel quiet.
Strengthen my faith when I feel alone, and help me trust that You are working, even when I can’t see it yet.
Thank You for never leaving me, even in the places that feel empty.
Amen.
