When God Takes the Pen

There’s something about the way we try to hold the pen.

We grip it tightly, like if we just press hard enough… write carefully enough… plan wisely enough… we can control the outcome of our own story. We outline the chapters, map the turning points, and quietly decide how things are supposed to go.

And when life doesn’t follow the script we wrote?

We panic.

Because suddenly the story feels messy. Unfinished. Uncertain.

Like the ink is running dry and we don’t know what comes next.

I’ve lived in that place – where the page in front of me felt blank, but my heart was anything but. Full of questions. Full of grief. Full of moments I never would have chosen, let alone written into my story.

Scars I didn’t ask for.

Losses I couldn’t rewrite.

Chapters I would have skipped entirely if I had the choice.

But here’s what I’m learning, slowly, sometimes reluctantly, but undeniably true:

He has never stopped writing.

Not in the pain.

Not in the silence.

Not even in the seasons that felt like everything was falling apart.

Somehow, only the way He can, He weaves redemption through every scar. The very places that felt like endings, become the threads of something beautiful. What looked like ashes becomes the beginning of beauty. What felt like the darkest night starts to fill with stars.

Not because the pain wasn’t real.

But because He is.

He is the Author of hope. The One who sees the full story when I can only see a single page. The One who knows how every broken line, every tear-stained paragraph, every unfinished sentence will come together in the end.

And the truth is… I’ve spent a lot of time trying to help Him write it.

Trying to fix the wording.

Trying to rewrite outcomes.

Trying to control the timing of things that were never mine to control.

But there comes a moment – quiet, but unmistakable, when you realize:

You were never meant to carry the pen.

Not because your story doesn’t matter.

But because it matters too much to be written by limited hands.

There is a deeper peace found in surrender than there ever was in control.

A steadiness that comes when you stop striving to figure everything out and start trusting the One who already has.

Even now,  in the places that still feel unfinished,  in the areas where I’m still waiting, still wondering, still healing…

He is writing.

Behind the scenes.

In the unseen.

In the quiet spaces where growth is happening without announcement.

And maybe that’s where you are too.

Staring at a chapter you don’t understand.

Holding a pen that feels heavy in your hand.

Wondering how the story could possibly turn out good from here.

If that’s you, you don’t have to force the next sentence.

You don’t have to figure it all out.

You can let go.

You can trust that the Author of your story hasn’t missed a single detail.

That He is still weaving, still restoring, still redeeming… even now.

So today, I’m loosening my grip.

I’m setting the pen down.

And I’m trusting the One who has been writing all along.
